An Isle of Man Steam Packet ferry crossing to Douglas.

Isle of Man Steam Packet Company

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company is the island's only ferry operator, and one of the most historic shipping companies in the world. Founded in 1830, it's the oldest continuously operating passenger shipping company anywhere.

Every ferry to and from the Isle of Man is run by the Steam Packet, all sailing to and from Douglas. This guide covers its routes, its fleet and how to book.

Steam Packet routes

All routes arrive at Douglas. The Larne route replaced the former Belfast service in 2026. See our Isle of Man routes guide for detail.

A historic company

Founded in 1830, the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company is the oldest continuously operating passenger shipping company in the world — nearly two centuries of sailing across the Irish Sea.

For most of that time it has been the island's lifeline to the mainland, and today it remains the sole operator of every passenger ferry to and from the Isle of Man.

The fleet

The Steam Packet runs three main ships, each with a role:

  • Manxman: the modern flagship, introduced in 2023, on the year-round Heysham route — a conventional ferry with a relaxed, spacious crossing
  • Manannan: the fast ferry, used on seasonal Liverpool sailings and some Irish crossings, with quicker journey times
  • Ben-my-Chree: the former flagship, now serving the Irish routes to Larne and Dublin

Onboard and travel tips

A few practical things worth knowing:

  • Cabins: available on the longer sailings for extra comfort
  • Book early for events: sailings fill up fast around the TT and other motorcycle events
  • Vehicles: car space is limited, especially year-round on Heysham — book ahead
  • Pets: note that the Steam Packet does not currently carry pets on its ships
  • Seasons: Heysham and Larne run year-round; Liverpool and Dublin are largely seasonal

Which route should you take?

Because there's only one operator, choosing your crossing is about choosing your port. Heysham is the reliable year-round route from England and the best bet for drivers, with good M6 links. Liverpool is often more convenient for foot passengers and city trips, but is largely seasonal. From Northern Ireland, Larne runs year-round; from the Republic, Dublin sails seasonally.
