A ferry crossing the Irish Sea to the Isle of Man.

Isle of Man Ferry Routes

There are four ferry routes to the Isle of Man, all run by the Steam Packet Company and all arriving at Douglas. Two come from England, one from Northern Ireland and one from the Republic of Ireland.

Which one suits you depends on where you're starting, whether you're taking a car, and the time of year — some routes run year-round while others are seasonal. Here's how they compare.

All Isle of Man ferry routes

Heysham–Douglas England
~3h 45m Manxman Year-round
Liverpool–Douglas England
~2h 45m Manannan (fast) Seasonal
Larne–Douglas N. Ireland
~2h 45m–4h 30m Various Year-round
Dublin–Douglas Ireland
~2h 55m Various Seasonal

All four routes are operated by the Steam Packet Company and arrive at Douglas. The Larne route replaced the former Belfast service in 2026.

Routes from England

Two routes link England with the Isle of Man:

  • Heysham–Douglas: the workhorse year-round route, around 3h 45m on the flagship Manxman — the most reliable choice for drivers, with good M6 links
  • Liverpool–Douglas: faster at around 2h 45m on the Manannan fast ferry, sailing right into Liverpool — often better for foot passengers and city breaks, but largely seasonal

Routes from Ireland and Northern Ireland

Two routes connect the island with Ireland:

  • Larne–Douglas: the year-round Northern Ireland route, which replaced the former Belfast service in 2026 — around 2h 45m by fast ferry or up to 4h 30m on the Ben-my-Chree
  • Dublin–Douglas: a seasonal link from the Republic, around 2h 55m — useful in the peak season and around island events

Year-round vs seasonal

Timing matters when choosing your route:

  • Year-round: Heysham and Larne run all year
  • Seasonal: Liverpool and Dublin sail mainly in the busier months, roughly spring to autumn
  • Events: extra demand around the TT and other motorcycle events — book well ahead
  • Winter: outside summer, Heysham is the mainstay from England

Choosing your crossing

With one operator and one island port, the choice is really about your nearest mainland port and the season. For year-round reliability with a car, Heysham is the natural pick. For a quick foot-passenger trip in summer, Liverpool is hard to beat. From Northern Ireland, Larne runs all year; from the Republic, Dublin is the seasonal option. See our ports guide for detail on each terminal.
